Hi there! I’m Gen, and I’m so excited to share a little piece of my heart with you. The name “Uprooted Journey” holds so much meaning for me. In fact, it’s become a big part of who I am, a reminder of my path and the transformation I’ve gone through over the years. It’s not just a name—it’s a reflection of my life’s story.
From One Home to Another: My Global Journey
Life has taken me on quite the adventure. Over the years, I’ve had the incredible privilege of living in multiple countries, soaking up different cultures, and meeting people from all walks of life. Every time I moved, I adjusted, adapted, and learned how to fit into a new home. Moving to a new country comes with its own challenges, but also so many opportunities for growth and self-discovery.
But, as you might expect, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Packing up your life in a couple of bags and calling a foreign country “home” often means leaving behind pieces of yourself—your roots, your culture, your sense of familiarity. Over time, you start to feel like you’re a little less “you” and a little more like an amalgamation, a mix and match, of everywhere you’ve been.
The Longing for Connection
It’s easy to get lost in the hustle of constant change. After years of moving and adjusting, I found myself longing for something. I wanted to reconnect—to remember who I truly was before the ever-changing backdrop of new places and faces. I wanted to find a sense of peace, of home, that didn’t require moving or constantly adapting. I needed a space to root myself once more.
That’s when I found sourdough.
The Healing Power of Sourdough
My journey with sourdough was never just about baking bread—it was about rediscovering myself. There’s something deeply therapeutic about the process of making sourdough. From feeding the starter to kneading the dough, each step is a practice in patience and mindfulness.
Baking sourdough became my way to slow down, to tune into myself again. With each rise of the dough, I felt like I was also rising—learning to be patient with myself and my process of healing. The act of creating something from scratch, of watching it transform into something beautiful, reminded me that I too could be reshaped and nurtured into something better. Sourdough, in all its simplicity and complexity, became a metaphor for my journey. The more I baked, the more I learned to heal, to breathe, and to embrace each moment of my life as it unfolded.
A Family Affair: The Heart of Our Home Bakery
What started as a personal journey soon grew into something much bigger—something that my whole family could be a part of. My husband, Martin, and our two kids have truly become the heart of our home bakery. As much as I love sourdough, it’s the teamwork and love that we’ve poured into our little family bakery that makes it so special.
Our weekends have become filled with market prep, baking, and spending time together as a family. Whether it’s shaping loaves or packaging orders, the kids are right there with us, learning the ropes and having fun in the process. It’s truly become a mini family bakery, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Watching my family work side by side with me—creating, laughing, and sharing this journey—has been one of the greatest blessings of all.
A Season of Growth and Gratitude
As we continue to grow and share our love for sourdough, we’ve been reminded of just how blessed we are in this season of our lives. Our faith has deepened in ways we never imagined. Through the highs and lows, the dough that rises and the dough that sometimes falls flat, we’ve been able to lean on each other and on God. Our family’s journey is one of trust, patience, and gratitude. We are so thankful for all the blessings God has given us—from the opportunity to share our craft with others to the joy of seeing this dream come to life in ways we never expected.
We’ve also been incredibly grateful for the ways our community has supported us. Being featured in SAWITU Magazine, attending markets like the Rockwall Farmers Market, Aspasians Market, and Rosini Vineyards Sip & Shops, and sharing our bread at events like Hometown Heath and Hometown Christmas Rockwall has all been such a humbling experience. We know this journey is part of a bigger picture, and we feel incredibly blessed to be living it.
What’s Next?
I’m not sure where this journey will take me next, but I’m so grateful for the path I’m on. I continue to learn, grow, and heal through the art of sourdough—and I’m excited to see where it leads. Sourdough has become more than just a craft for me. It’s a way of life, a practice in patience, and a reminder that no matter how far we go, there’s always a way back to ourselves.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. Whether you’re here because you love sourdough, are curious about the process, or are just looking for a bit of inspiration, I’m so glad you stopped by. Here’s to finding home, wherever we are—and to the family, faith, and community that help make it all possible.
With so much love,
Gen
